Director of Development

Position Overview

The Director of Development oversees fundraising for the organization.  Over the past few years, this position has been responsible for the securing of millions of dollars for many prominent pediatric programs including the Frances L. Loeb Center for Child Protection & Development, Reach Out and Read, Video Interaction Project, Adolescent Prenatal/Parenting Program, and the Bette Blauner Center.  These programs impact more than 25,000 children and teens from all five boroughs of New York City.  This position reports directly to the President of the Board of Directors.

 About Children of Bellevue

For over 60 years, Children of Bellevue has been dedicated to funding the development and sustainment of innovative programs that improve the health and well being of pediatric patients at Bellevue Hospital Center, America’s oldest public hospital.   Each year, more than 25,000 children and teens from all five boroughs of New York City come to Bellevue for urgent medical treatment, psychiatric care, routine medical and developmental care, and child abuse intervention.

Bellevue Hospital has been quietly leading the way in child advocacy and compassionate care with the opening of the nation’s first children’s clinic in 1874.  Children of Bellevue, a nonprofit organization, advances this legacy by raising over one million dollars annually for ground breaking programs that have proven, life changing results:

  •  Child Protection:  Protocols developed and established at Bellevue, are now fundamental to protocols used nationwide in the identification and treatment of child abuse and neglect.
  •  Child Life:  Field of pediatric medicine created at Bellevue and is now the standard of care in Pediatrics nationwide. Helps children cope with the pain and fear associated with illness, medical treatment and hospitalization.
  •  Child & Adolescent Psychiatry:  Children 3 to 18 years of age receive comprehensive mental health care within In-Patient and Day Treatment settings.  First to establish a public school within a public hospital.  Recently opened Psychiatric Emergency Room for children and adolescents is state-of-the-art and unique in the city. New psychiatric wing to open in 2012.
  •  “Reach Out & Read”:  Second RO&R site in the nation.  NYU/Bellevue study proved success of program and fostered program’s growth with close to 4 million families now served nationwide. Program promotes literacy as a component of pediatric primary care, strengthens critical bonds between parent and child, increases language development and school readiness.
  •  “Video Interaction Project”:  Program to empower parents to take an active role in their child’s development by strengthening critical interactions and bonds through playing, teaching and reading.  Published scientific research proves reduction in physical punishment, increased interactions and maternal empowerment, and reduction in maternal depression and stress.

DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT
Reporting to the President of the Board of Directors, the successful candidate will work in concert with the Board to set development direction.  The Director of Development cultivates donors, provides organizational leadership for Board members in attaining fundraising targets; assures efficient and sound administrative and financial practices; and is the organization’s  public face when it comes to development.

SKILL SET
The successful candidate will have a proven record of successful fundraising, leadership and achievement of organizational goals. S/he will have direct experience in a wide range of fundraising modes including cultivation and acquisition of major gifts, corporate, and foundation gifts and direct mail. S/he will be adept at developing and managing relationships with donors, board members, and the community.

 PERFORMANCE GOALS

  • Establish fundraising goals with Board of Directors, develop and implement specific plans to achieve major gift, corporate, foundation, and individual giving targets.
  • With the Board of Directors, identify and directly cultivate major gift candidates through personal visits, tours, events, and other one-to-one interactions.
  • Identify new audiences with the capability of providing significant resources and introduce them to Children of Bellevue’s mission, history, and programs.
  • Lead Annual Appeal effort.
  • Establish and maintain a productive internal donor database.
  • Ensure prompt, effective donor recognition through personal letters and conversations, printed and electronic media, and other public recognition as appropriate to the gift and occasion.
  • Interface with hospital administration and programs to facilitate fundraising efforts.
  • Represent donor interest to program staff.
  • Provide Board of Directors routine updates of fundraising efforts and financial spreadsheets.
  • Manage private funds appropriately.

 

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 3 to 7 years experience in professional fundraising, including prospect research, prospect identification, in-depth financial research and wealth screening.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including relationship management, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions in a manner consistent with the essential job functions.
  • High level of professionalism, ethics, and confidentiality.
  • Sensitive to organizational needs and the public image.
  • Knowledge and experience with child advocacy initiatives a plus.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Raisers Edge.
  • Participate in evening and weekend activities as necessary.
