March was a major month for volunteering!

On March 11, 2012 volunteer group New York State of Mind came back to Bellevue to help the younger unit of Child & Adolescent Inpatient Psychiatry create leprechaun hats out of foam paper.

March 13 marked our monthly volunteer event. From 6:30PM-8:00OPM volunteers worked with the teens of Child & Adolescent Inpatient Psychiatry to decorate “lucky charms” made of fabric. The adolescents presented their charms to the group and shared their thoughts on luck.
The younger unit learned the legend of Johnny Appleseed through story and tasted different kinds of apples. Apples were not only sliced for tasting but also cut up for using as stamps.

On March 20, 2012 a group of volunteers from Credit Suisse brought shirts and fabric markers for the younger unit of Child & Adolescent Inpatient Psychiatry to decorate. The weather was so nice on the first day of spring that we were able to move the activity to the roof where kickball and other active games provided even more fun.

On February 14, Valentine’s Day, volunteers from the Sears Holdings Corporation helped the children of Child and Adolescent Inpatient Psychiatry worked with the children to decorate denim tote bags for themselves or loved ones. The group also lead a discussion on what love is, different kinds of love, and how to show it.

Arkadium Volunteer Group

On February 12, volunteers from Arkadium helped the children of Child and Adolescent Inpatient Psychiatry explore the history of our presidents, what the president’s job is, and what the American flag represents. They also created their own flag or currency, should they ever become president.

On February 7th, volunteers helped the younger children of Child and Adolescent Inpatient Psychiatry craft valentines for their loved ones. Many children created valentines for their parents, friends, and some of the nursing staff.

On February 9th, volunteers helped the teens of Child and Adolescent Inpatient Psychiatry craft valentines for their loved ones. The teens really enjoyed the option of creating valentines for themselves and for the children of Child and Adolescent Inpatient Psychiatry who will also be hospitalized on Valentine’s Day.

2012: A Great Year to Volunteer

On January 10, 2012, volunteers painted sweatshirts with the teens and younger children of Child & Adolescent Inpatient Psychiatry. This activity not only allows patients to express themselves but also provides them with warm winter-wear during the colder months.

Donate through Goodie Mags

Children of Bellevue has partnered with Goodie Mags, a fellow 501(c)(3), to provide the children at Bellevue Hospital Center’s fun and challenging ways to combat the boredom and fear that can come with a prolonged hospital stay.

These books are distributed to children and teens in the Inpatient Psychiatry Units.

Thanksgiving Volunteer Activity

Volunteers joined the children and adolescents of Inpatient Psychiatry in building “Thankfulness Trees” to display on each unit.

The teens and volunteers worked together to build trees and then decorate with colored leaves.

The younger unit decorated leaves and wrote things they were thankful for on each leaf and taped it to a tree cut-out next to the play room.
