Jelly's Story

Jelly uses art to communicate her frustrations and gain a sense of control over her experiences.

Hey, my name is Angelica. When I first found out I had HIV, I was very sad. I thought I was very different from everybody else. But I realized that I wasn't and I feel better about myself. The hardest thing, when you are HIV positive is taking the pills every day and you get tired of taking them. I used to take 13 pills a day but then they lowered it to four pills a day.

I asked my doctor if I was ever gonna have it out of my body, but he said no. So, I got sad again, but then I thought if I keep taking it and taking it I will feel better and won't have to take medicine anymore.

One night I was going to take my medicine, but I didn't want to take it anymore. My mother said I have to keep taking it and I thought maybe they would find a cure soon. Every day I watch the news and wonder if there is a cure for HIV And I know they are working on it.

If you just found out you have HIV, don't be shocked, just live with it. It's going to be there through your whole life. In the beginning you are gonna have to take a lot of pills.

When I come to my hospital doctor, he takes my blood. When I come back again, he tells me if my T-cells are low or high. If your T-cells are low, that means you haven't been taking your meds. If your T-cells are high, that means you have been taking your meds, but it will still be in your body until you leave the Earth. That's a long time.

When I grow up, I wanna be a doctor to try and find a cure for this, because no one is trying to. It might not help take the virus out of my body, but it will stop me from taking all of these pills.

When I come to the hospital, I also draw pictures explaining my feelings about it.

Well, that's my story. Now if you have a story, send it to us. Other people should have stories too.

People contribute time and energy in a variety of important ways - with friends and co-workers, through work or on their own time. Kids' lives are better because they do so.
