I
came to Bellevue via a volunteer referral service about six
years ago. Having retired from the fashion world, I had hoped
to finally make some use of my degree in psychology/sociology,
and particularly requested a setting where I would work with
children.
My first experience was with Children of Bellevue's Reach
Out and Read early literacy program. I read to well children
in the clinic waiting area, and delighted in the interaction.
In 2000, I learned that Children of Bellevue had successfully
fundraised to open the Frances L. Loeb Child Protection and
Development Center for abused children. The Center was in
need of a volunteer. I was ready for something more challenging
and less safe.
It’s been four years since I began volunteering in the
Center. I serve as the initial greeter and as the children
arrive, I invite them to color, read, play, or just sit with
their caretakers as they wait their turn to see the doctor.
Welcoming the children to the Center, and helping them feel
comfortable in our non-threatening – albeit hospital
– setting gives incredible meaning and purpose to my
days.
