In
July 2002, I attended a Junior Committee Summer Bar Bash with
some colleagues from work. Shortly thereafter I contacted
the development office to find out how I could become more
involved. I was especially interested in pediatrics at Bellevue
Hospital Center because my family is originally from the Lower
East Side and I was born at Bellevue.
As
a member of Children of Bellevue’s Junior Committee,
I serve on benefit committees selling admissions, raffle tickets,
and soliciting in-kind donations and sponsorships. A couple
of times a year, I volunteer with children on Bellevue’s
inpatient psychiatry units. My first volunteer experience
was December 2002 when a dance troupe visited the Hospital.
We decorated the gym for the performance and served refreshments.
Although I was reluctant to approach the kids at first, I
think I got more out of the day than they did. It felt really
good to help out.
