The Emergency Room

Children who come to Bellevue's emergency room are often hurt and scared; their parents feel the same way. Emergency Room doctors and nurses, concentrating on many patients and on the medical crisis at hand, cannot spare the time to help them cope emotionally with what is going on. That's where Children of Bellevue's Child Life and Development Specialists come in. They prepare children for surgery and evaluate whether they have been abused. They provide crisis intervention to children who need to cope with the stress and discomfort of emergency care and comply with necessary procedures. Throughout the encounter they support families.
