Pediatric Inpatient Unit - 8 North

Child Life professionals work in inpatient pediatrics to prepare children for surgical procedures, train medical students in child development and therapeutic play, offer parent support and counseling, and perform developmental assessments. They also teach children about their illness and hospitalization and assist them in developing a wide range of coping techniques. Child Life specialists are integral to the hospital's new Pain Management Team. Services to psychiatry patients include socialization activities for children who tend toward oppositional behavior, parenting support groups, developmental and therapeutic play programs.

Children of Bellevue is grateful to the Starlight Children's Foundation NY*NJ*CT for its long-term support of the Horticulture program.

The Uncle Yuddy Program

The Uncle Yuddy Program pays for a Child Life Specialist to work in the playroom on weekends.

Weekends are especially difficult for patients because hospital staff is limited and parents are frequently working or caring for other children at home. Waiting from Friday afternoon until Monday morning for the playroom to be open is a long stretch for a child.

The Uncle Yuddy Fund was established in memory of Eugene Zitwer whose life was characterized by his great concern, love and compassion for this fellow human beings. The Foundation provides fun, recreation and emotional support for seriously ill children. Children of Bellevue, Inc. is grateful to the Uncle Yuddy Fund for supporting weekend services in the playroom.
