Ambassador Begins Renovation of Bellevue's Inpatient Playroom

Demolition began last week to commence construction of a new Children's Playroom and Teen Activity Center at Bellevue Hospital Center in Manhattan, a joint effort among the hospital, Children of Bellevue, Ambassador Construction and The Starlight Foundation. Ambassador President Jay Koven (second from right) spearheaded the project after learning of the need for the facilities from Jeff Gural, Chairman of Newmark & Company Real Estate and President of the Starlight Foundation's NY/NY/CT chapter. All materials and labor will be donated through Ambassador and its vendors as a service to Bellevue and Starlight, a non-profit foundation that fulfills its mission by providing in-hospital entertainment to patients, in addition to its wish-granting activities and six other important life-enhancing programs. The new Children's Playroom and Teen Activity Center, which will be dedicated in memory of former Ambassador President Irving Koven, will lift the spirits of over 2,000 patients a year upon completion in less than two months. Pictured (L to R) are: Dr. Wade Parks, Chairman of Pediatrics at Bellevue Hospital Center; Ann Haire, President of Children of Bellevue; Mr. Gural of Newmark (seated); Rob Zopf, Director of Children's Services for The Starlight Foundation; Gloria Mattera, Director of Child Life, Bellevue Hospital Center; Terry Miles, Chief Operating Officer, South Manhattan Network; Mr. Koven of Ambassador; and Dr. Robert Schacht, Vice Chairman of Pediatrics at Bellevue Hospital Center.

Children use art to express their hopes and aspirations as well as their conflicts and fears. Art helps children communicate and gain a sense of control over often-difficult circumstances.
