Junior Committee Encourages Volunteer Effort

Children of Bellevue and Board member Greg Osborn hosted a thank-you party in Tribeca on July 26th for Juniors who've volunteered on behalf of the children and served on recent benefit committees. More than 30 friends attended. Cathy Moraitis, a Coordinating Manager of Child Life, spoke about programs that Children of Bellevue helps fund. We are grateful to Susan Lyall Utsch and Ulrika Bengtsson for helping us thank our dedicated volunteers.

On August 23rd, a dozen members of the Junior Committee lined the floor of a vacant hospital room to paint colorful aquatic scenes on ceiling tiles. The art was created by Child Life Specialist Stephen Campbell. Volunteers filled in his drawings with bright paints. Ceiling tiles will be placed in the trauma room of the Pediatric Emergency Center. The colorful art will serve as a distraction from medical procedures, helping to decrease anxiety and providing a focal point away from the discomfort. This project is one of several made possible by the Repetto Fund, established in memory of Richard E. Repetto.

Children use art to express their hopes and aspirations as well as their conflicts and fears. Art helps children communicate and gain a sense of control over often-difficult circumstances.
