Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
15
million.
In the U.S., 15 million children and teens experience a serious mental health issue. Less than 50% of them will get the help they need. Most insurance plans don’t offer extensive coverage for mental health services – especially not Medicare and Medicaid – which most of Bellevue’s families rely on to help. Children of Bellevue is committed to supporting the mental health needs of children and adolescents – in the hospital, in schools, and in the community. Children of Bellevue helped create the only dedicated Children’s Comprehensive Psychiatry Emergency Program in New York State at Bellevue Hospital.
What We Achieved
Our Impact in Numbers
15,959
OUTPATIENT TREATMENT VISITS
In 2025, Bellevue’s Child and Adolescent Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic provided 15,959 outpatient treatment visits. This includes visits also provided within the general pediatric clinic by mental health clinicians embedded there - HealthySteps provided an additional 1,967 psychologist encounters to pediatric patients ages 0-3 years and the Collaborative Care Program provided additional mental health visits to pediatric patients ages 5 and up. To drive superior outcomes, we utilize evidencebased, innovative modalities tailored to young patients. Our multidisciplinary team employs trauma-informed treatments that empower children to build vital coping skills, process emotions safely, and remain engaged in their journey toward healing.
550
INPATIENT ADMISSIONS
To strengthen outcomes for children and adolescents, Bellevue’s Child and Adolescent Psychiatry programs incorporate innovative treatment modalities including Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Creative Arts Therapy, and Skills Training for Affective and Interpersonal Regulation (a trauma-informed treatment used in our inpatient services). Each modality plays an important role in delivering highquality mental health services by helping young patients build coping skills, express emotions in safe and constructive ways, and remain actively connected to their treatment. Our multidisciplinary approach allows the program to meet a wide range of clinical needs while providing compassionate, comprehensive care.
2006
CCPEP VISITS
The CCPEP provides three types of care: emergency psychiatric evaluation, brief 72-hour admissions in our Extended Observation Unit, and follow-up services after discharge from CCPEP in the Interim Crisis Clinic. Bellevue is one of very few hospitals where an experienced child and adolescent psychiatrist and nursing team is on-site 24 hours a day, 365 days per year to serve and families in crisis. In 2025, our CCPEP program had 320 patients with a total of 2006 visits.
What We Envision
As we look toward 2026, our vision is to evolve Bellevue’s Child and Adolescent Psychiatry services into a premier city-wide model for mental health equity. By strengthening our continuum of care—from emergency interventions to long-term outpatient support—we are dedicated to reaching NYC’s youth at the most critical stages of their development.
Expanding Our Continuum of Care:
A major milestone in this vision is the launch of our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), anticipated to open in early 2026. This program is designed to bridge the gap for youth who require more support than traditional outpatient therapy but do not need inpatient hospitalization. Once fully operational, the IOP will:
Serve an additional 140 patients and their families each year.
Provide intensive, evidence-based interventions to prevent crisis and promote long-term stability.
Offer a lifeline to families navigating complex mental health challenges in an underserved landscape.
Through this expansion, we ensure that Bellevue remains a sanctuary of healing, providing the curated resources and longitudinal support necessary to build resilience and ensure stronger, healthier futures for all of NYC’s children.
